Brave New World of European Commission: CETA

19. Juli 2017 - 19.

The Belgian PM Louis Michel confirmed after meeting with the regional Governments, that he cannot sign, and that there will be no summit.
Some bullet points:

  • Both regions of Wallonia and Brussels (and other parliaments of the same people) deny the signature 4,5 million people (Luxembourg: 400.000)
  • All social-democrats of Belgium (French, Flemish and German speaking), all radical left, and the French speaking Christian democrats voted against to authorize signature to CETA as it stands.
  • Walloon Government has sent his critics to CETA one year ago.  Walloon Parliament adopted its resolution on 27 May. Commission only answered: we will explain you.
  • The main point of differencies is right to regulate, the ICS Investment Court system (former ISDS).  But it's not the only one.  EP could not vote on this point (in TTIP resolution) because of manoeuver of President Schulz
  • Cultural links between Wallonia and Canada, specially Québec, are intense.

18. Oktober 2018 - Corporate Europe Observatory:

The great CETA swindle

Today, Belgium followed a ‘no’ vote by two of its regional Parliaments on the controversial EU-Canada trade deal CETA, temporarily blocking the first step towards the treaty’s ratification in a meeting of EU trade ministers. A close look at the CETA – and a recent declaration designed by Brussels and Ottawa to reassure critics and gain support for its ratification – shows that concerns over CETA are well-founded. Behind the PR attempts by the Canadian Government and the European Commission to sell CETA as a progressive agreement, it remains what it always has been: an attack on democracy, workers, and the environment.

September 2016 - Attac Erlangen:

25. September 2014 - Trade Justice Network:

Over 100 Canadian and EU groups strongly oppose CETA’s corporate rights

The Canada–European Union Summit, which starts on September 26 in Ottawa, will mark the conclusion of the negotiation of the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) between Canada and the European Union. The CETA involves much more than just trade in goods; it will also encompass trade in numerous services, including financial services and public services. In addition, the agreement covers regulatory cooperation, public contracts, agriculture, protection of investors and labour mobility. The texts, which we are told are final, were kept away from the scrutiny of members of parliament throughout the negotiations and have been slow to be made public. This is a notorious subversion of democracy that is intended to suppress any debate, thus presenting our citizenry and elected officials with a fait accompli with no possibility of amendments. Since no parliament will have been able to take a position on its provisions, the Ottawa summit will in essence be a new public relations exercise to publicize the agreement, with the customary speeches and photos. The formal adoption process will follow, and the agreement will then come into force.

Kein europäisch-kanadische Handelsabkommen (CETA)

PIRATEN leaken geheime Dokumente
