29. September 2019 - BDS SOUTH AFRICA: Anglican Church in Southern Africa adopts BDS boycott of Israel

The South African human rights and Palestine solidarity NGO, BDS South Africa, welcomes the decision by the over 4.5 million strong Southern African provincial synod of the Anglican Church (ACSA) that has adopted the BDS boycott of Israel. ACSA represents Anglican Christian communities in southern African countries including South Africa, Namibia, Mozambique and Angola.
In a motion, now a binding resolution, titled "Time to act: Solidarity with Palestine" the church specifcally calls for support of the “well-directed Boycott, Divestment and Sanction (BDS) actions against the Israeli state until they end their occupation of Palestine”.

British Society for Middle Eastern Studies endorses boycott of Israeli universities
The British Society for Middle Eastern Studies (BRISMES) has endorsed the Palestinian call for a boycott of Israeli academic institutions, in a vote taken at its AGM in Leeds on Monday.
According to reports on social media, the resolution supporting the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) campaign was easily passed, with almost 80 percent support (final numbers to be confirmed).
The resolution highlights Israel’s obstruction of "Palestinians’ right to education by destroying Palestinian universities and schools, arresting students, raiding and forcing Palestinian universities to close, and restricting Palestinians’ movement."

The European Union’s Legal Obligation to Stop Trade with Illegal Israeli Settlements
Hits the Mainstream

Last week, one of the most prominent legal journals in the world, The European Journal of International Law, published an article on its website affirming that the European Union and its member states have a legal obligation to stop all trade with illegal Israeli settlements built on stolen Palestinian land. This indicates that opposition to trade with Israeli settlements is growing and becoming increasingly mainstream.
As the EJIL article explains, Israel’s ongoing construction of illegal settlements on Palestinian land violates cardinal rules of international law like prohibit seizing of territory by force, forbid apartheid and population transfer as well as the right to self-determination. Under the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court Israeli settlement construction may amount to war crimes.

Why I, as a Proud Israeli, Want the World to Boycott Us

With much difficulty, I am asking my fellow citizens to lead the call for an international boycott, because otherwise our country will be lost forever.
"Boycotts for political reasons are a legitimate tool that falls under the protection of freedom of political expression." a Haaretz editorial declared recently ("Entry prohibited to critics," January 17). This was written following the Knesset Interior and Environment Committee’s approval for the second and third readings of a bill that would prohibit the granting of entry visas or residency permits to foreign citizens who call for a boycott of Israel or the settlements.
Therefore, I invoke the authoritative statement by Haaretz to call upon Israeli citizens who belong to the peace camp to appeal to the international community to impose a boycott on Israel.

Israel-Palestine discussion 2016: How to (not) boycott Israel

Since the onset of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, several parties have argued about potential resolutions. Recently one of the pressing matters is the question whether a boycott could motivate Israel to respect the Palestinian civil and political rights.
A boycott of Israel can be managed in several ways. The country could be refused right to join diplomatic discussions. Companies could end their trade agreements, universities could forgo alliances with Israeli educational institutions and consumers could refrain from buying Israeli products from the supermarket.
But under which circumstances is such a boycott justified? Which strategy is efficient? And what are the moral implications of such measures? Tonight three prominent guests will discuss their view on this complicated matters, respond to each other and answer questions from the audience.
We focus on the Palestinian Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement, a global campaign attempting to increase economic and political pressure on Israel to comply with the stated goals of the movement: 1) the end of Israel’s occupation and colonization of Palestinian land and the Golan Heights, 2) full equality for Arab-Palestinian citizens of Israel, and 3) respect for the right of return of Palestinian refugees. Why boycotts, divestment and sanctions are the just way forward.

Despite Israel’s descent into unmasked, right-wing extremism, particularly with the current escalation of its brutal occupation and repression, Europe remains largely complicit in supporting Israel’s occupation and violations of Palestinian rights, despite the empty rhetoric coming from the European Union.
All the buzz in Brussels and Tel Aviv about EU labeling of products from Israel’s settlements in the occupied Palestinian territory cannot hide the fact that Europe’s relationship with Israel conflicts with its espoused values and legal commitments.

My Comments on BDS,
at the AMP Conference, November, 2014 in Chicago

The reason that BDS and other forms of resistance exist is because Palestine is not free, it is occupied, its people endure the hardships of an oppressive occupation regime, known as Zionism. Palestinians are subjected to the inevitable brutality that comes with occupation and they are subject to racist laws that are designed to discriminate against them, to disenfranchise them to take away their land and eventually get them to either surrender completely, leave or die.

22. Juli 2014 Nobelpreisträger_innen u.v.a.m.:

The arms trade and Israel's attack on Gaza

Israel has once again unleashed the full force of its military against the captive Palestinian population, particularly in the besieged Gaza Strip, in an inhumane and illegal act of military aggression. Israel's ability to launch such devastating attacks with impunity largely stems from the vast international military cooperation and trade that it maintains with complicit governments across the world. Over the period 2008-19, the US is set to provide military aid to Israel worth $30bn, while Israeli annual military exports to the world have reached billions of dollars.

To Save Israel, Boycott the Settlements

To believe in a democratic Jewish state today is to be caught between the jaws of a pincer.

On the one hand, the Israeli government is erasing the “green line” that separates Israel proper from the West Bank. In 1980, roughly 12,000 Jews lived in the West Bank (excluding East Jerusalem). Today, government subsidies have helped swell that number to more than 300,000. Indeed, many Israeli maps and textbooks no longer show the green line at all.

Boycott, Divest, Sanction

It's time. Long past time. The best strategy to end the increasingly bloody occupation is for Israel to become the target of the kind of global movement that put an end to apartheid in South Africa.

[ vollständiger Artikel bei The Nation ] [ bei Naomi Klein ]

In its 1948 declaration of independence, Israel committed to "ensure complete equality of social and political rights to all its inhabitants irrespective of religion, race or sex." Today, those fundamental democratic ideals are at stake. In Israel, the continued occupation of the West Bank and an emboldened conservative government are putting Israeli democracy at risk. While in the United States, the refusal of major Jewish organizations to defend democracy and speak out for human rights in the Jewish state is alienating many young liberal Jews from Zionism itself. In The Crisis of Zionism, Peter Beinart lays out in chilling detail the looming danger to Israeli democracy and the American Jewish establishment's refusal to confront it.
