US Engagement in the Middle East Is Riskier Than Ever
Twelve years after the invasion of Iraq, the US presses onward in a region where it has few clear goals. What could go wrong?
What if the United States had not invaded Iraq in 2003? How would things be different in the Middle East today? Was Iraq, in the words of presidential candidate Bernie Sanders, the “worst foreign policy blunder” in American history? Let’s take a big-picture tour of the Middle East and try to answer those questions. But first, a request: After each paragraph that follows, could you make sure to add the question “What could possibly go wrong?”

A Fruitless Pursuit of Reactionary Vengeance

The costs, the strategy, the blowback. After everything the United States has done in the Middle East, President Obama has decided to move in a fruitless pursuit of reactionary vengeance that will degrade and ultimately destroy the US economy.

1. September 2009 - Middle East Online, Immanuel Wallerstein:

The Firestorm Ahead

There is a firestorm ahead in the Middle East for which neither the US government nor the US public is prepared. They seem scarcely aware how close it is on the horizon or how ferocious it will be. The US government (and therefore almost inevitably the US public) is deluding itself massively about its capacity to handle the situation in terms of its stated objectives. The storm will go from Iraq to Afghanistan to Pakistan to Israel/Palestine, and in the classic expression "it will spread like wildfire."
